LEAF PEEPING IN TRUCKEE / TAHOE
It’s views like this that remind us that the High Sierra is a playground for all, all year-round; with the fall season upon us, it’s certainly one of the many that reasons why we treasure the lifestyle that comes with home ownership in Truckee/Tahoe.
We love the fall … how it subliminally slows us down to consciously unplug and head into our backyards to explore the best of Mother Nature.
This year, we encourage you to take this time to experience the ‘slow season’ where clear blue skies, crisp clean air, and quiet nights are just the beginning of what you will treasure while you’re here … be it for a day, a week, or a lifetime in Truckee/Tahoe.

One of the more popular areas to hike is directly off I-80 up on Donner Summit in Norden, CA. The trail leads you thought the forest and ends at several lakes that just beg for a lazy afternoon picnic. Here’s a good review written on AllTrails.com by Helen Douglas who hiked here on September 8th: “The first mile or so over exposed granite is stunning, but there are times when it’s unclear which direction the trail is headed in. Once past this first mile, and over the railroad tracks, the trail is very clear and easy to follow. The next section up through forest is nice enough. Keep going, and the final approach towards the lakes makes it all worthwhile. Stunning mountain lake scenery. We ate lunch at the second lake.”
Just below Martis Peak, you will find a variety of trails that overlook Lake Tahoe’s north shore. The review on AllTrails.com by Chibi Techu had a nice recap and some good insight: “Great views! You can really get the layout of North Tahoe from here. From the inside of the lookout building at the summit, check out the map of the mountains just below the ceiling. If you’ve hiked other mountains in the area, it’s great to see everything labeled right above your head.”
Here’s a trail that we love to recommend as there’s not much traffic and lots of views. Just a month ago, one the gents that placed a review on AllTrails.com said this: “Very nice trail. Very little rough terrain. Beautiful river for much of the way and shaded 75% of the time. Ends with a beautiful view of the reservoir. Loved watching the patch of Aspen trees glimmer in the wind as the river flowed nearby.”
The trail is rated as moderate and offers ten miles (round-tip) of pure Sierra scenery. It starts in the Ponderosa Palisades and there’s a real good map on AllTrails.com. Highlights of the reviews suggest you do take a map and if you bring your dog, bring water for both of you. The best review follows: “It’s absolutely beautiful out there … so go explore God’s beautiful creation!”
This is a leaf peepers paradise! As stated on Truckee.com, this popular trail can be accessed on foot, skates, or bikes and is paved from start to finish. You can ride or hike from downtown on Bridge Street and continue up the canyon along Trout Creek. Along the way, take time to take in the fresh crisp fall air and fantastic fall colors throughout the forest overflowing with quaking Aspens.
