Over the past few months, we have shared a substantial list of things to keep you out and about during this magnificently beautiful time of the year.
For our news today, we thought it might be time to offer you some ideas on how to unplug, and plug-in, to some of our favorite ways to slow down and take in what is left of the fall season. Like to fish or learn to fly fish? How about some scenic spots for a family picnic? Read on.
At our real estate office in Truckee, CA. we encourage you to head to the High Sierra soon to enjoy the great outdoors, peacefully, as it will be snowing before we know it!
Go Fish!
There might not be another sport that has a way of completing removing any thoughts of business from your mind than fishing in the High Sierra. Gone are your needs to check your e-mail, post on Twitter, or check-in with the rest of the world.
The minute you put your rod in hand, and wade into one of the region’s clear running rivers or lakes, is the moment that you have achieved the ability to completely unplug from your everyday life and plug-in to one of the most peaceful environments on the planet.
To get you – and your family, too – on your way, here’s a list of some of the top spots for fishing in the Truckee and Lake Tahoe region.
In addition, if this is a first-time experience for you, or you don’t have a boat or all the equipment, we have also provided a LONG LIST of some of the top fishing guides in the region. The size of the list alone is one big indication of the popularity of fishing throughout the Truckee/Tahoe region.
Before you head out, get online and check out the local fishing reports from Tahoe.com.
Home to Cutthroat, Rainbow, Carp, and Mountain Whitefish, the Truckee River is an icon in the High Sierra that has earned its reputation for some of the most brilliant settings and challenging waters in which to fish. The River actually starts right here in our hometown of Truckee – flowing out the pristine waters of Lake Tahoe. It runs over 115 miles through our town, down along 1-80 through Reno, and works its way to Pyramid Lake. And every inch can afford years of fishing expeditions that you will never forget!
We prefer to just hang out locally as the stretch between our historic downtown and Squaw offers easy access for beginners and the most seasoned pro. Here you can use bait, lures, or flies – yet we always suggest you connect with one of our local guides (see the list below) to increase your odds each day!
For the more adventurous, there are some hot spots off 1-80 near Floriston, Mystic Road, and Farad. Just let the parked cars be your guide to the best spots of the day – and be prepared to hike down to the River … yet it’s all worth it.
Boca & Stampede Reservoirs
These are two popular locations to hook a Rainbow, Brown, and Brookies that are just a short scenic drive from Truckee and super spots to fish.
At Boca, we like to take our float tubes or kayaks and just paddle around in the morning or late afternoons when the fishing is best.
If there are those in the family that prefer not to fish, there are some nice campsites along the shoreline where one can settle in with a good book or skip rocks from the edge of the lake while you cast the day away.
Just up the road, Stampede is another local hot spot with some good-sized fish. Regulations are in effect here so only Barbless Artificials can be used. If you’d like to take your treasures with you, only two fish under 14” can be taken home.
Lake Tahoe & Donner Lake
Whether you are on the shoreline, tossing your line off a pier, or out in the middle of Lake Tahoe, the views alone will slow you down and toss you into a state of bliss.
Throughout the lake there are some well-known hot spots, so we always check in with the locals to be in the know as to where to go. Deep lining for Mackinaw Trout and Kokanee Salmon is by far our favorite way to spend a morning on the lake. If you don’t have the right equipment to get to the deeper spots where the fish are biting, several charters offer the right equipment to get you to where you need to go.
In the late afternoons, we also look forward to tossing a line off a pier or shoreline at Donner Lake. That adventure is one incredibly peaceful way to end a day.
And isn’t that a lovely thought?

One more thing. All the locations noted above are excellent spots for a lazy day with a picnic to share with family and friends. No matter where you go, we encourage you to take the time to unwind before the hustle and bustle of the holiday season is here.
Enjoy the good times – get unplugged!
