You can mix a family picnic with a bit of education, too, when you visit Donner Memorial State Park. Plan to spend some time enjoying the crisp, clear, and often cooler air at this 6,000’ elevation where you can learn all about the Donner Party and what they encountered while trying to travel west back in the mid-1800s. Be sure to stop in at the Visitors Center to see their impressive displays about the Donner Party and other significant historical details about the Chinese construction of the railroad and Native American inhabitants of our region.
There might not be a better location to enjoy a full day with the little ones in tow than at the Truckee River Regional Park. It overflows with activity options to please every age. For the kids, the playground is ‘Heaven-found’ with dinosaurs to climb, ride and play on and train rides that they will never forget. For a full schedule, visit the Truckee Donner Railroad Society’s website. For those a bit older, there is a very popular Disc Golf Course that’s ideal for a fun-filled afternoon.
