If you haven’t heard about High Fives Foundation organizations you should learn more about this great Community driven association of athletes and partners focused on raising money and awareness for athletes that have suffered life altering injury while pursuing their dreams in the winter action sports community. High Fives Non-Profit Foundation, based in Truckee, CA, became an official 501c.3 non-profit on January 19, 2010. Founded by Roy Tuscany.
In 2006 Roy suffered a devastating spinal cord injury while training in Mammoth Mountain, CA, rendering his lower body paralyzed immediately after the accident. After having high hopes of becoming a world class professional skier, Roy then had to relearn everything in my life from the ground up. A truly life-altering experience, eventually began making great progress. With the help of strong personalities, positivity, and high fives all around me, Roy stepped into skis and loaded the lift at Sugar Bowl for the first time in March of 2008. The encouragement and positivity he received during his recovery inspired to start a foundation to help others with similar experiences.
High Fives has created a Winter Empowerment Fund. This is a program that provides support for alternative healing and therapies, rehabilitative and adaptive equipment. Funds are allocated to assist disabled athletes in the recovery process. Along with the CR Johnson Healing Center located in Truckee they received over 3,000 visits in 2013 to their 2,600 square foot facility located in the Pioneer Center. This location allows members of the community to works out their body, mind, and spirit. It serves as a positive force in the day to day tasks of regaining strength and mobility.
All together this past year High Fives Foundation has served over 58,000 clients, athletes and winter sports enthusiasts recover from life altering injuries. All funded by events like the TRAiNS and donations from the community. Please join the Elder Group to continue to support this great organization, ever little bit helps! We hope to see you out there!
