With the longest day of the year right around the corner on Wednesday, June 21, we are making plans to celebrate the summer Solstice in Truckee-Tahoe! Known as the ‘universal symbol of light, life and growth’ there are endless ways to rejoice that summer is here in beautiful Truckee-Tahoe!
Below you will find some traditions our family enjoys – and we hope you will too! Each has their own memories over the years. From boating, to beaching to backyard barbecues, they all have significance tied to the start of summer for the Elder family. We hope you like our list and take time to create new memories with your family and friends.
For those who love to float on the Lake, there are some homes for sale on Donner Lake and estates for sale on Lake Tahoe that might be of interest to you. If you would like a personal tour, reach out to Alison at any time. The Elder family is big on boating and knows the shoreline well!
Take a Picture of the Sunrise Over The Sierra
There is something spiritual about listening to the lapping waters on the shore of Lake Tahoe while watching the sunrise; the peace and quiet makes one want to make this a ritual every day. There are some great places to catch the summer solstices in Truckee-Tahoe.
The West Shore is undoubtedly the best spot to capture the sunrise, and here is a list of our favorite locations to capture the beauty of this time of day.
Although there are hundreds of docks along the shoreline, most are private. If you have a connection, use it! If not, below are public docks with free access:
- Lake Forest Boat Ramp
- Tahoe City Marina
- Obexer’s Marina
- North Tahoe Marina
- Homewood High & Dry Marina
- Sunnyside Marina
Find Peace at the Beach
Make it an all-day celebration of the fun in the sun. First, pack your beach chair and blanket, Yeti cup with java, cooler with afternoon snacks and head to one of these public beaches.
We always try to get settled before sunrise as the colors in the clouds are often just as spectacular! Feel the sun on your back, take in the crystal-clear skies and savor your stress-free day.

Walk Within the Wildflowers
The spiritual nature of the Solstice can be experienced in many ways, especially here in the High Sierra. Every year, we set aside time to walk in the wildflowers that paint a magical blanket throughout our mountain meadows. Exercise your body and soul and fill your senses with the scenery as you walk through the wilderness this year.
With an abundance of wildflowers during the spring and summer months, now is the perfect time to download the Wildflower Guide provided by local explorer, Susan Kelso.
