October 31, 2024
Downtown Truckee
4:00 – 6:00 pm
Here’s an event we recommend every year, and with good reason. Downtown Tahoe City businesses have joined together to work with the Tahoe City Public Utility District to bring you a festive family event this Halloween. It’s free, it’s fun and for all to enjoy. Dress your best, bring your friends and fido, too, to Heritage Park where the festivities begin.
Continuing our news about how to have a howlin’ good time this Halloween, rent a Ghost Hunting Kit from the Truckee Library. Then head to downtown Truckee to explore what awaits you behind and within some of the oldest establishments in town.
When you’re done seeking the spirits, belly up to the bar at the Truckee Hotel and toast a spirit or two for you!
Plan Your Own Pumpkin Carving Party
With rain, or snow (!) in the forecast for this Halloween, it might be the perfect time to plan your own Pumpkin Carving Party! Here are a few key tips that have always worked for the Elder family for a fun and effortless event.
Pick out the Perfect Pumpkins (or have your guests bring their own.) : We look for pumpkins that have a flat bottom, are firm, and have plenty of room to carve that frightful or funny face.
Get the Tools of the Trade: Wherever you go to get that pumpkin, it is highly likely there will be Carving Kits close by. If you choose to use your own, the serrate knife is our number one ‘go-to’ for getting into the guts of the subject at hand. Large spoons and smaller paring knives are handy too. If there are going to be lots of kids around, skip the sharp stuff and supply festive stickers and colorful markers to keep them safe and having fun.
Up Your Creative Juices: We have found that stencils are a super option for newbies to the carving scene or those who really want to be more creative. There are plenty of styles that you can find online or perhaps make your own to share with friends and family.
Space it Out: It’s always more fun if there’s ‘room to move’ between all the carvers and their creativity. Large tables or the kitchen counter seem to work best for us.
Prep for a Mess: We all know how messy things can get when carving those pumpkins. We spread out an old sheet and if you don’t have one, stop in a local thrift shop to purchase one before the party. Lots of our friends like to keep the pumpkin seeds for roasting and munching after the festivities are over; have some plastic containers close-by to gather those goods!
Preserve the Party Favors! Once the creative carvings are complete, pass around a jar of petroleum jelly to wipe along the carved edges. This tip will keep the pumpkin from drying out too soon! Another tip, have some vinegar and paper towels close by to wipe the pumpkin’s skin to preserve the color well into the next few weeks.
