Skate into the Sunset!
Some of the most memorable times we shared in the great outdoors were skating on the local rinks all winter long. To bring back those cherished memories, we researched some of the best places to skate in Truckee-Tahoe. No matter where you go, be sure to check in ahead of time as most require a reservation.
This is our top pick for ice skating in the Sierra with sites of Squaw Valley’s Six Peaks as your backdrop. On-site skate and hockey rentals are available with advanced reservations.
Our friends at Truckee Donner Recreation and Parks operate this public rink all winter long. In addition to traditional hours for skating, they have a full calendar of events that you can review right here.
Snow Bike the Sierra
If you have yet to try snow biking, this is the time to do so! It is a perfect outing for the two of you as you seek an ideal “date day off the slopes!”
First, watch this video about snow biking in and around Truckee-Lake Tahoe which was produced by the North Lake Tahoe Resort Association.
Then, make plans to enjoy tons of fun while the snowpack offers easy and “scenery-spectacular” snow biking trails for the novice to the most advanced. Our favorite trail is the old 06 Forest Service Road / Sawtooth Trail that takes you up Mt. Watson and into Tahoe City.
For snow bike rentals and more trail information, contact TruckeeWinterSports.com. In addition to Fat Tire Bikes (for snow biking), they offer rentals for snowshoes, XC equipment, and lots of local insight.
Do not forget to pack a picnic to polish off a great day off the slopes!
Go Play in the Snow
An exhilarating day of snowshoeing throughout the Truckee and Tahoe region reminds us all as to how fortunate we are to live in a mountain town. One of our favorite spots to snowshoe is the Glacier Way Access Trail in Tahoe Donner. Other options that are always on our list include Coldstream Canyon and Donner Lake Memorial Park. For more snowshoe trails within the region, visit AllTrails.com for some of the best spots to enjoy the scenery with your sweetheart by your side.
Make it a Spicy Sledding Night!
When is the last time you and yours shared a sled or saucer under the stars? Thanks to the creative team at Granlibakken on Lake Tahoe’s West Shore you can put this on your ‘date night’ list this year. Every week they host “Saturday Evening Spicy Sledding” from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. The cost is $40 per person (complete with glow stick and lasers). What makes it so ‘spicy?’ They serve up tacos, burritos, nachos and spicy, spiked warm drinks from their food truck every Saturday night.
Have A Picnic ~ By the Fire or on the River’s Edge
Be it in front of your fireplace, cozied-up by the fire pit outside, or a ‘day-date’ for lunch at a picnic table along the Truckee River, these are perfect options to safely enjoy your sweetheart this Valentine’s Day. Before you head to the River or light the fire at home, order your meal to go at Moody’s and pair it with your favorite blend to toast to the two of you throughout the day and night!
Plan a ‘Date Night In’
Get out the dress-up clothes, light the candles, and enjoy a romantic ‘date night in’ this year. There is no need to cook. Just click back into our recent story about all the delicious “gourmet-to-go’ dinners that are available through some of our favorite restaurants and catering services right here in Truckee and Lake Tahoe.
Or you can make dinner together!
First, head to The Pour House to select some locally cured cheeses, specialty spreads, marinated olives and salami for your appetizers. Be sure to review their selection of Champagne and scrumptious wines to complement your menu.
Then, pick-up a Prime Rib, Beef Tenderloin, or Leg of Lamb at Mountain Valley Meats, then head over to New Moon Natural Foods for the freshest selection of vegetables and salad sides in Truckee, CA.
For the final course, it has to be chocolate on Valentine’s Day. Sweets Handmade Candies in Old Town Truckee and Sierra Bakehouse will have more selections than you can possibly consume in one night!
Happy Valentine’s Day!
No matter what you choose to do with your Valentine this year, we can assure you that the Truckee-Tahoe region overflows with romantic options for you to share with your sweetheart, year-round.
