Snow Train, Atmospheric River, Pineapple Express; no matter what you want to call it, call it a winter storm series that may never be forgotten in Truckee-Tahoe – the Year of Snow – 2023! As it stands now, this is the second snowiest season on record in Truckee!
Just last Sunday, Sugar Bowl recorded its 700th inch of snow and broke that record on Monday with 703” … and there’s more snow in the forecast.
You can read about this incredible season below. The good news is that all the snow will benefit the Lake Tahoe Watershed and rivers and streams below.
Whether you love the lake life or prefer a cozy retreat with a river nearby, Elder Group Tahoe Real Estate is here to find you your next best place to call home sweet home. You can see what is on the market right now through our website, or better yet, connect with Alison for a personal tour.
Throughout the Sierra Nevada (which is an appropriate Spanish name for “snowy mountain range,”) the professionals at the Central Sierra Snow Laboratory (CSSL) continue to monitor our snowpack and document their (close-to) record-breaking statistics.
Built in 1946 by the U.S. Weather Bureau and Army Corps of Engineers, the Snow Lab has been a fundamental scientific facility for developing an understanding of snow processes for over 75 years. CSSL has a long and continuous record of hydrometeorological observations including maintaining one of the longest manual snow depth records in the world from 1879 to the present.
This past week, the CSSL announced that 2023 is the second snowiest season on record in Truckee, with 677” of snow (so far). The biggest winter the snow lab has recorded was nearly 68 feet in 1951-52 when more than 200 passengers on a luxury train were stranded for three days near Donner Pass. Now that is a lot of snow!
The snow lab is part of a larger regional consortium of research stations and field sites known as the Central Sierra Field Stations that include:

In Like a Lion, Out Like a Lamb?

The peaceful pillow-like photo above allowed us to sit back a bit and enjoy the calm between the storms this past winter. And if AccuWeather has it right, we should be experiencing a calmer spring season with warmer temperatures and sunshine ahead. There’s still more to come with this being the second snowiest season on record in Truckee
Let’s hope the age-old proverb “In Like a Lion, Out Like A Lamb” comes to fruition!
