If you have yet to take in one or more of the popular Alpenglow Winter Speaker Series events, make plans to do so on February 20th. Now in its 14th season, some of the most accomplished athletes in the USA share the stories of their challenges and adventures during these free casual evening presentations. Each event is a fund-raiser for a local cause, and the series has raised $170,000 for local non-profits in the North Lake Tahoe community.
During this specific event that will raise money for Tahoe Fund, you will have the opportunity to meet Hadley Hammer who is one of the world’s most respected big mountain extreme skiers. Here’s a little more insight from her bio:
“Though she crushes the big lines with the best of them as demonstrated with her competition record on the Freeride World Tour, Hadley also happens to be a sommelier, gourmet chef, book nerd, showcase Mountain Athlete and climber to name just a fraction of her side hobbies.”

For those who are not familiar with this non-profit, its mission is to run a ‘makerspace’ which is a community-operated workspace where locals and visitors alike can network, socialize and enhance their hobbies or professions in computers, science, art, and engineering. In addition, there are five shops on-site (Wood, Metal, Ceramics, Technology, and Textiles) with many state-of-the-art tools to help you take your projects to the next level.
As an example, here’s a list of their upcoming classes that are open to the public:
February 23 – March 3: Ceramics, Intro to Wheel Throwing & Handbuilding

The Giving Fund Speaker Series | High Altitude Baking Tips
A Benefit for the Tahoe Giving Fund
Here’s another excellent speaker series that we continually recommend to our clients at Elder Group Tahoe Real Estate in Truckee. This program is hosted by Tahoe Donner and provides an opportunity for the community to gather and socialize while they enjoy presentations from a variety of accomplished speakers.
On Thursday, February 20, Daniella Luchian will give a presentation about High Altitude Baking Tips. And for one who has lived in the Sierra for many years, this is one you will want to put on your list.
Daniella studied Baking and Pastry Arts at the Culinary Institute of America in New York and has worked for Gary Danko’s Restaurant in San Francisco and The French Pastry School in Chicago. She is the owner of Sierra Bakehouse, a commercial bakery in Truckee which is open to the public on Friday mornings.
