Snowshoe to Tahoe’s “Hidden Castle”
If you have yet to set your sights on the famous Vikingsholm Castle, put this on your ‘Tahoe Bucket List.’ Located at the head of Emerald Bay, the Castle and its magical setting have been claimed as “one of the most photographed spots in America.” And with good reason.
The trailhead to the Castle is located on Highway 28 on the southwest shore of the Lake. Park at the top and take your picnic and snowshoes on a 1 ½ mile trail that will lead you to this California landmark. Known as “one of the finest examples of Scandinavian architecture outside of the Nordic countries,” the Castle sits in the back of Emerald Bay, is wrapped with 232 acres of terrain and is home to the only waterfall that flows directly into the Lake. Although the Castle is not currently open for tours, there is plenty of magic to capture this spring and throughout each season at the Lake.

Walk Over the Lake, Literally!

Officially called the “Tahoe East Shore Trail,” locals refer to this breathtaking 3-mile multi-use path as the “impossible trail.” For those of you who have experienced walking literally over the Lake on its extraordinary bridges, we are sure you can concur that this was a project of a lifetime that was worth every engineering effort.
The trail stretches from the former Ponderosa Ranch parking lot in Incline Village and leads to the scenic Sand Harbor Nevada State Park. Ideal for a spring walk or bike, the path will take you up and over the Lake’s east shore and then under Highway 28. From this location, get your camera out as the trail will lead you to access points to the popular Hidden Beach, Memorial Point, and scenic outcropping of boulders that are perfect for a picnic stop.

Experience the Magic of Chickadee Ridge
Throughout our winter wonderland there are endless opportunities to get back to nature. Over on the east side of the Lake, just off Mt. Rose Highway, is an ideal way to truly experience the wonders of wildlife on Chickadee Ridge. During the winter and springtime, the trail is not actually marked yet so many people enjoy this trek that you will not have any problem finding the Ridge where the colorful little birds await your arrival. Take some birdseed along, bring your snowshoes, and perhaps a snack or two, as you will want to spend some time in this little piece of paradise.
