On April 4, 2023, the news that the Cal Neva Resort had changed hands again (formerly owned by Larry Ellison, co-founder of Oracle) was all good news for those who have been promised redevelopment in Crystal Bay, Nevada.
Denver-based real estate firm McWhinney acquired the Cal Neva Resort. CEO Chad McWhinney described the Cal Neva as a perfect complement to his company’s “hospitality lifestyle portfolio.”
Initially built in 1926 and later redeveloped by Frank Sinatra in 1960 and remodeled by C.P. Bluth Enterprises in the early 90s, the Cal Neva has needed renovation for the past several decades. The property closed for business altogether in 2013 and has switched hands several times.
According to the developer’s website, McWhinney’s project team, in partnership with The Kor Group and operating partner Proper Hospitality, is excited to begin the visioning and design process for the 13-acre Cal Neva site. The award-winning design team is focused on upgrading and modernizing the existing hotel tower while retaining some of the original characters of public spaces like the historic Indian Room and Frank Sinatra Showroom.
The intent is to offer a world-class spa and wellness retreat in addition to enhanced outdoor and gathering space options. The design and development team understands the need to maintain a balance with the beauty of Lake Tahoe and the surrounding community.
