If you’re looking for the ultimate IRONMAN challenge, Lake Tahoe is the race for you. Starting Sunday September 21st in Kings Beach State Receration Area. In Europe there’s IRONMAN France, with 5,000 feet of climbing through the Alps and IRONMAN Lanzarote, with two mountain climbs and incredible winds. In Asia there’s IRONMAN Malaysia featuring the highest recorded temperatures at an IRONMAN race. North America now has its own race where normal limits do not apply: IRONMAN Lake Tahoe.
One of the newest North American events on the IRONMAN race circuit, Lake Tahoe is a can’t-miss destination for triathletes. Renowned for its spectacular mountain vistas and crystal clear lake, Lake Tahoe’s pristine setting is primed to become as coveted a destination for IRONMAN athletes as it has long been for skiers and nature-seekers.
With over 8,000 feet of climbing on the bike course, added to the normal challenges of 2.4-mile swim, 112 mile bike ride, and marathon run, IRONMAN Lake Tahoe is arguably the world’s toughest course. Do all of that at 6,000 feet of altitude, and join a select group of IRONMAN finishers.
IRONMAN 70.3 Lake Tahoe athletes will share the course with IRONMAN Lake Tahoe athletes, but will finish earlier in the day and can return to the finish line to enjoy the festivities of the midnight IRONMAN finish line.
Race morning starts at the Kings Beach State Recreation Area, where sandy, beach-front shores deliver athletes to the clean, clear waters of North Lake Tahoe. A lakeside transition and the start of the bike course bring riders along the shore with spectacular views down the 21-mile length of the Lake as riders enter Tahoe City. Cyclists race through the Truckee River corridor, following the Truckee River past Squaw Valley and into the town of Truckee. Here the course turns south back toward the lake, rolling past Northstar California and the start of the climb to Brockway Summit at a 7,200 foot elevation.

Back at Kings Beach, athletes repeat another loop before finishing at Squaw Valley, home to the 1960 Winter Olympics. With a transition at Squaw Valley, runners will proceed back up the Truckee River corridor along the Truckee River bike path. Athletes will be treated to a relatively flat course along one of the most scenic stretches in world before returning back to Squaw Valley and the satisfying finish of IRONMAN Lake Tahoe.
Truckee is very excited to be part of the IRONMAN Lake Tahoe course! The bike portion of the race will come through historic downtown Truckee twice. Downtown Donner Pass Road will be closed from 6:30am to around 4:00pm from Spring to Bridge streets, similar to Truckee Thursdays.
We can expect the first pro athletes to be coming through downtown Truckee around 8:00am, and the final athlete to be coming through around 3:00pm. Cowbells to cheer on the athletes will be for sale in various locations including the California Welcome Center in the Train Depot.
The economic impact to the region of IRONMAN Lake Tahoe is estimated to be $8 to $15 million in spending on restaurants, lodging, retail, and other activities over the course of the event. More than 2,500 athletes are expected to take part with each bringing three to four guests for an estimated 7,000 to 10,000 visitors staying five to six nights.
