Oktoberfest at Palisades Tahoe
The largest Bavarian playground in the Sierra just happens to be right here in our backyard on September 17 starting at noon through 6:00 pm. You can’t miss this one that draws one of the largest gatherings of locals and visitors alike to sip authentic German beer, compete in the Oktoberfest Games and dance to classic Bavarian music all day long.
We always look forward to the festivities that include activities for all ages and is a big fundraiser for the High Sierra Lacrosse Foundation.
First, the food and beverage! Think: authentic beer, brats, strudel, authentic pretzels, tons of Swiss cheese and classically prepared pastries that will make you think you are in the streets of Bavaria.
Then the games begin. Whether you compete in the free events or not, be sure you don’t miss this:
Keg Rolling: 1:00 pm – Roll and empty keg through a challenging course, fastest time wins
Brat Toss: 2:30 pm – Toss the bratwurst onto a keg, with each round adding difficulty, last person standing wins
Stein Holding Competition: 4:00 pm – Two full 1-liter steins are held at shoulder height, last person standing wins
And of course, the music, which lasts throughout the event in the Plaza and on the Beer Hall Music Stage.

The most resilient athletes from all over the world will test their athletic tenacity at the legendary Spartan Ultra World Championships at Palisades Tahoe this fall.
If you have never attended a Spartan event, do so this year. It’s a grueling match-up of some of the most competitive ultra-runners in the sport. The Spartan Ultra merges the sport of obstacle course racing along a 50K trail with 60 obstacles placed within its high-altitude Sierra setting.
The website write-up describes it best:
Spartans are in for an intense race full of twists, turns, slopes, and stunning views. With a surface elevation of 6,224 feet and a max elevation upwards of 9,000 feet, your lungs and quads better be ready for a long haul of rocky running on the slopes. The notorious alpine swim promises a splash of fresh mountain water. And after the race, the village is an awesome place to eat, shop and celebrate in the festival area.
Here’s the schedule:

While we are on the subject of the ‘fall’ season, whatever happened to the word “autumn?” History notes that the words “fall” and “autumn” originated in Britain where the word “autumn” was far more popular. Our research found that it was so popular that the word ‘fall’ did not appear in the dictionary until 1755!
According to Merriam-Webster, while both terms are technically accurate, fall is favored in America and autumn is preferred in the U.K. Autumn came first as a name for the season between summer and winter, according to the dictionary publisher.
