Plan Your Perfect Fall Day in Truckee-Tahoe
It’s Time for Mother Nature’s Fall Symphony!
From the rustling of the golden Aspens in the wind, to the lapping of water on the edge of Lake Tahoe, the sounds of the cold clear water of the Truckee River working its way over river rocks to its final destination … it’s a season that captures all our senses from sun-up to sundown throughout the High Sierra.
And what a perfect time of the year to plan your perfect day or weekend in our piece of mountain paradise, Truckee-Tahoe!
To get you on your way, we surveyed our family, friends and Clients of Elder Group Tahoe Real Estate in Truckee, CA to come up with a list of our favorite things to do here in the Fall. Take a look at our list below. Contact us at any time, or while you are out and about, stop by the Elder Group office in Truckee!
Good Morning!
Time to close the lap-top, put your cell on silent and head out for a day filled with fresh air, clear crisp skies, and some delicious food and fun to enjoy along the way. Recharge and rejuvenate!
As we live in ‘The biggest little train town in the USA’ it is only appropriate to start the morning off at Jax at the Track on the south side of the train tracks in historic downtown Truckee. It is a classic spot that was showcased on Food Network’s “Dinner, Drive-ins, and Dive’s” hosted by Guy Fieri. You can take our word as a suggestion for breakfast, or click into Guy’s TV show video to learn about his own opinion!
Over in Donner Lake, we always love to check-in at the family owned and operated Donner Lake Kitchen that has been a local’s favorite since the mid-70s.
If your plans are pointing toward a day on the West Shore, start your morning off at the West Shore Café that has been serving sensational breakfasts and lunches to locals and visitors alike since 1978.

The old saying “What goes up must come down” is perhaps the best way to describe what it is like to climb some of Squaw’s craggiest peaks. And thanks to our fiends at Alpenglow Expeditions you do not have to be an expert to give this sport a try. All in a few hours (or more) you will climb, hike, and scramble up the famous Tram Face high above the Olympic Valley. Go Back in Time – Tour the 20-Mile Museum
If, by chance, the weather sends you inside, here is an excellent way to get you in the car and outside, too, for an historical drive through time. Located along Old Highway 40, there are signs throughout this 20-mile route that you can access from Donner Pass Road. Each stop along the way will take you back in time to learn about all the magnificent history of this Sierra route. Get ready to capture those memories gone by about the Transcontinental Railroad, Ice harvesting, the Native Americans, history of the ski business, and so much more.
Up, Up, Up and Away …
With all the colors coming to life around the crystal blue shorelines of Lake Tahoe, this time of the year is the perfect time to fly high above big blue. Lake Tahoe Balloon adventures is currently the only hot air balloon company in the area. It is located out of South Lake Tahoe yet worth the drive. You start on the world’s only United States Coast Guard certified aircraft carrier vessel for hot air balloons. And within minutes, you will soar like an Eagle over Eagle Falls, Emerald Bay, and the Colbalt blue waters of Lake Tahoe. For all the specifics, visit LakeTahoeBalloons.com.
Time to Dine!
With so many award-winning restaurants from the edge of the Lake Tahoe through Truckee and into Donner Lake you may have to enjoy dinner out more than just one night in a week’s time. It was a challenge to pick just a few of our favorites so for more ideas, feel free to tap into our local advice at any time! In addition to the restaurants that we posted in our newsletter about “Where to Slip Out for an Al Fresco Night on the Town,” here are a few more favorites that are a must-not-miss!
