Starting on January 28th some of the best snow sculptors in the world will come to Northstar to compete in an international sculpting competition. There will be competitors from Finland, Germany, Japan, The Netherlands, Czech Republic, Canada and the US. The sculpting will start on the 28th and run until the 2nd of February – the best days to view the sculptures will be Thursday, January 30th, Friday, January 31st and Saturday, February 1st.
The snow carvers brave extreme conditions and work tirelessly creating pure, ephemeral sculptures that will last only a short time. Attendees are provided the opportunity to witness firsthand the creation of world-class sculptures in a time lapse framework due to the medium being snow.
To be able to create the most intricate and compelling works of art from snow, carvers must first be provided high quality blocks of tightly compressed snow. Creating the ten blocks for Carve requires over 300+ tons of pure, clean snow. This immense, three day process would not be possible without Paul Zarubin and Pal Combs of Mt. Lincoln Construction, and Gary Morgan, Tom Davis, and Matt Reeder, Northstar’s incredible snow making and resort operations team. This crew works non-stop for three days round the clock creating the blocks.
Carve Tahoe will award 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes to the top teams as determined by a panel of judges. In addition, fans will have the opportunity to vote for The People’s Choice Award. The People’ Choice Award is determined by guests voting for their favorite sculptures with a few dollars collected at the Carve Site. Those funds will go entirely to the Humane Society of Tahoe-Truckee and to fund the Carver’s travel. The final award given at Carve is one of the most prestigious, The Artists Choice Award. This is an award given to the team that the artists themselves believe created the most compelling and beautiful sculpture.
Although Mother Nature isn’t cooperating by bringing us mounds of snow we are used to seeing in Tahoe, there are still plenty of events for the whole family to enjoy and the snow at Northstar is actually FANTASTIC and weather beautiful, everyday!
