Tahoe and Truckee plays host too many outdoor challenges this summer. Whether you’re and Olympic athlete, novice, or anywhere in between there is an event for you this summer!
Tahoe Waterman Challenge June 30th
The Tahoe Waterman Challenge is a swim, run, and stand up paddle event broken into several short heats. Compete to see if you have what it takes to advance to the final round and be named champion. The course and event are designed so that those new to the sport as well as seasoned competitors can have a fun and challenging experience. There is also a youth race for ages 5-17 years old.
Run to Squaw June 30th
This 7.9 mile course travels alongside the Truckee River. Enjoy spectacular views along this stunning scenic corridor. This run is perfect for all abilities. The route is fast with little elevation gain. The course starts at Commons Beach with a stellar view of Lake Tahoe. It then heads on to the Truckee River Trail finishing at in the heart of the Village At Squaw Valley. There are aid stations and course marshals along the way to cheer you on and make sure you are hydrated. Event check-in and parking is located at Squaw Valley. A shuttle takes you to the start at Commons Beach in Tahoe City. You then run back to Squaw Valley.
Kids Triathlon July 27th – 28th
The Donner Lake Kids Triathlon is an actual triathlon featuring the swim-bike-run format for kids ages 4 to 15. The focus of the event is to provide a triathlon experience to this age group in a non-competitive and fun atmosphere
Swim: The swim courses are near shore. Younger ages can stand if needed. Corners are marked by large buoys and water safety staff are positioned along the way. The average water temperature of Donner Lake in July is 69 degrees.
Bike: The bike courses take place on South Shore Drive and are paved. Each distance course has a designated turn-around location. Riders stay on the right side of the road.
Mount/Dismount Area: There is a designated spot where riders can mount and then dismount their bikes on the way in and out of the transition area. This is a safety measure to control speed.
Run: The run courses are on surface streets and depending on the distance they are a loop or an out and back.

Donner Lake Triathlon – July 27-28
Swim: The swim courses are rectangular-shaped courses in Donner Lake. Corners are marked by large buoys and kayakers/boats are along the course to ensure your safety. The average water temperature of Donner Lake in July is 64-69 degrees. Wetsuits are optional. The swim course maps are posted on our Course Maps page.
Bike: The bike course takes place on Old Highway 40. The entire course is paved.
The Olympic bike course is 40K (24.8 miles) and is also an out-and-back course. Cyclists start their ride with a climb up to the top of Donner Pass (about 1125’). This portion, first and last 4 miles, of the bike course is closed to all vehicular traffic (except emergency vehicles). Upon reaching the pass you will have a great view of Donner Lake and the Truckee Valley. You continue westbound along Old Highway 40, passing Sugar Bowl and Donner Ski Ranch, cabins, ponds and other wonderful scenery. This portion of the course is relatively flat with small rolling hills. Upon reaching I-80, you will cross over the freeway and continue towards Kingvale. This portion of the coures is surrounded by trees and you can often glimpse the South Yuba River. The turn-a-round point will include an aid station where you can toss your water bottle in exchange for a new one (either filled with water or fluid replacement). The course concludes with a curvy and speedy descent down Scenic Old Highway 40 where we remind you to use extreme caution.
Run:
The Olympic run course includes a 6.5 mile run. Triathletes head out of the transition area on the North side (same as bike in/out) and turn right on Donner Pass Road. Athletes travel along Donner Pass Road with views of the lake to their right for about 3 miles. This portion is relatively flat. Then participants turn right and head into Donner Memorial State Park. Here a very short section of the course is on a trail. As participants exit Donner Memorial State Park, they will start the final section of the run course on South Shore Drive. South Shore Drive features three hills. Both courses conclude at the finish line at the West End Beach. There will be four water/fluid replacement stations along the Olympic run course.
Lake Tahoe Mountain Bike June 22
Come join us for a great day of mountain biking on a scenic and fun course. Race in the 4 or 8 hour race as a solo or on a team of 2, 3 or 4 (teams of 3 and 4 apply to the 8hr race only). The course is approximately 12.6 miles. Fast lap times are around 53 minutes.
The course is a mix of single track and fire-road. It is a fast and smooth course with few technical sections. The most laps wins. Approximately 700 feet ascending and descending per lap.
Lake Tahoe Open Water Swim August 24th
The Lake Tahoe Open Water Swim is a celebration of the natural environment of the Tahoe region featuring the beautiful, clear and clean water of Lake Tahoe and the white sand beaches of California’s Ed’ZBerg Sugar Pine State Park.
There is a 1/2 mile, 1.2 mile, and 2.4 mile course set up just off the beach of the scenic Ehrman Mansion where spectators can see the action first hand from the beach and grounds.
All courses start just of the beach. You’ll stand shin deep looking due east across 13 miles of Lake Tahoe. Large orange and yellow buoys mark your route. The water is clear and you will see deep down into Big Blue and when you take a breath notice the scenic shoreline, pines and mountain peaks.
- 1/2 mile course is two right turns and back to the finish
- 1.2 mile course is three right turns and then one left turn back to the finish
- 2.4 mile course is twice around the 1.2 mile course
Bring your friends and family as the course are easily viewed from the shore.
Wetsuits
Wetsuits are allowed. The water temperature will be in the low 70’s. Non wetsuit and wetsuit division are scored separately.
