The O’Neill Tahoe Cup Series’ Tahoe Fall Classic, a 22-mile paddleboard race and the longest inland distance paddle race in the world, will take place on Sunday, September 14, 2014.
The third and final race of the Tahoe Cup series, the Fall Classic will host over 150 men and women prone and standup paddlers and 20 ‘Elite Class’ paddlers competing for a piece of the series’ $20,000 cash purse.
The cross-lake race starts at 8am from El Dorado Beach in South Lake Tahoe. Competitors will paddle 22 miles across Lake Tahoe to the finish at Kings Beach State Beach in North Lake Tahoe.
Prone paddleboarders, who paddle their long boards on their knees have an additional incentive in the cross-lake event. The first prone paddleboarder to cross the finish line in Kings Beach will win $300 cash, the second $200, and the third across will win $100.
Two other race events will be held on Sunday in addition to the lake crossing. A 3-mile short course race for paddlers of all abilities will begin at 10am, followed by a ‘Grom’ race (for paddlers under 11 years old).
Following the race, awards will be presented and lunch will be provided to the long and short course participants by “Men Wielding Fire.” Spectators are welcome. Free paddleboard demos will be provided by Surftech.
The Tahoe Cup finish area will also welcome participants in the 1st annual North Lake Tahoe Ukulele Festival, taking place in Kings Beach on Saturday, Sept. 13th. Ukulele musicians will bring their “uke” magic to the beach on following the paddle race on Sunday afternoon with ukulele vendors on the beach and ‘open mic’ ukulele performances on stage.
Paddle event participants need to provide their own equipment (including a personal floatation device-(PFD) and have a release of liability signed by a parent or legal guardian.
The Tahoe Cup race series, presented by O’Neill and hosted by the Lake Tahoe Paddleboard Association (LTPA), features three events throughout the summer – the Donner Lake race on May 24th, the Jam From the Dam on July 12th, and the Tahoe Fall Classic on September 14th.
