Over the past 100 years, the Lake Tahoe and Truckee region has been promoted through hundreds of films that were shown at cinemas around the world. Known for its magnificent scenery on one side of the Sierra, to the lush ranchlands below, the area has been captured in countless feature-length films.
By far the most famous was the sequel to The Godfather: Part II that captured the world’s attention of the ‘ever-since-famous’ West Shore of Lake Tahoe.
Fast-forward to this upcoming month where cinephiles (movie aficionados) can continue to enjoy hours of short films and full-length features right here in and around our hometown.

Returning after several successful years, Tahoe Film Fest continues its passion to showcase some of the most intriguing films about the environment. As noted on their website:
“Those who live in and around Lake Tahoe respect their environment and there are countless organizations that exist to protect beautiful Lake Tahoe. The premiere section of our programming are environmental films. We try to locate new and important environmental films to showcase as a way of not only educating our young people but celebrating the efforts of everyone who helps to maintain the beauty of such a pristine lake and its surroundings.”
In addition to environmental features, the organization will also present selections from the American Tahoe Independent Films, New Films from Latin America, and a Filmmaker Tribute.

A bonus to the entire festival is that a portion of the proceeds will benefit the US Davis Environmental Research Center (TERC). This is an exceptional organization that focuses on the health and wellness of Lake Tahoe. If you have yet to visit the center in Incline Village, at the campus of Sierra Nevada College, we encourage you to do so. They offer a very informative film where you can see ‘below the depths of Lake Tahoe’ and participate in a variety of educational lectures, workshops, and events.
The Tahoe Adventure Film Festival continues to refine its positioning as a rather unique event in the perception of film festivals. Their promoters say it best:
“This is not your typical stuffy film festival. This fun high-energy evening will fuel your passion for action and ignite your senses for adventure. We highlight the best adventure sports films of the year and showcase the action sports world best talent.”
Prior to the festival, the organizers review the submissions from action sports filmmakers from around the world. Once that list is established, the artists then are requested to capture and produce a short segment to be presented during the event.
Much like the Tahoe Film Fest, this event is also a fundraiser and will support the Sierra Avalanche Center. Raffle tickets could land you a heli-ski trip with “enough gear and swag to stock any adventurer enthusiast’s garage.”

This is another excellent option that ties in the return presentation of “Winterland,” paired with a farm to table dinner at the Olympic Village Lodge. It’s presented by the well-respected Teton Gravity Research group that consistently impresses all with their action sports flicks that are captured on the slopes and off.
