For those of us who have lived and worked in our quaint community of Truckee, California, we know that there’s always something new and exciting to talk about.  And this past week is no exception.  With ski resorts reporting up to 15 feet of new snow, we certainly secured all the national news one could ask for … for many great reasons. 

Fortunately, our town has a good history of great snowfall which means we have all the professional services once could need to take care of the local utilities, roads, interstate, high elevation snow removal and public safety. So When WAS the Last BIG Winter?

For over 130 years, professionals and amateurs have been documenting the weather throughout the Sierra Nevada.  History notes the process began with basic precipitation measurements that were recorded by the Central Pacific Railroad in eight-hour increments along the train tracks over Donner Summit. Today, the stats are recorded by remote sensors, and professional meteorologists and hydrologists, at least twice a day.

It is because of these efforts that we are able to bring you a complete view of the history of our snow levels throughout the past several decades. Thanks to the Central Sierra Snow Laboratory for the chart that follows, you will have the most accurate information at your next neighborhood get-together as to which year had the last BIG WINTER in Truckee/Lake Tahoe
